Gaza: "What Benjamin Netanyahu's government is doing today is unacceptable," Emmanuel Macron denounces as "a disgrace."

"The humanitarian crisis is the most serious we have seen" since October 7, 2023, when 251 people were kidnapped by Hamas, triggering a response from Israel.

"This is an unacceptable humanitarian tragedy," the French head of state insisted, adding that "it is not up to a President of the Republic to say 'This is a genocide,' but rather to historians."

The French president recalled that he had been "one of the only leaders to go to the border" between Egypt and Gaza, "one of the worst things he had ever seen," lamenting that "all the aid that France and other countries deliver" was "blocked by the Israelis."

Emmanuel Macron also considered that the question of a revision of the "cooperation agreements" between the EU and Israel was "open".

The Netherlands has asked the European Commission to examine whether the Israeli government is complying with Article 2 of the Association Agreement with Israel, which stipulates that relations between the EU and Israel are based on respect for human rights and democratic principles, with a view to a potential revision.

"This is a legitimate request and I invite the European Commission to investigate it," Jean-Noël Barrot stressed earlier Tuesday to the Assembly.

"We have fought tirelessly to end this conflict. And today, we need the United States of America," Emmanuel Macron also said, adding that US President Donald Trump was "the one who holds the leverage."

The Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official data.

Israeli reprisals have left at least 52,908 dead in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to data released Tuesday by the Hamas Health Ministry, deemed reliable by the UN.
